My name is Henrik, and I currently live in the Lafayette, a small town in the Front Range of Colorado. I originally hail from Middlebury, Vermont, where I first fell in love with jazz trombone, folk guitar, and photography. After studying jazz trombone at the Idyllwild Arts Academy in California for a year, I developed an interest in small-scale farming and decided to attend Deep Springs College (a small and remote junior college located on a cattle ranch). After two years of studying humanities there, and learning how to operate irrigation lines and milk dairy cows, I went on to finish my undergraduate education at UC Berkeley, with a degree in Human Geography and a focus on Rangeland Economics and Sustainable Ranching. After college, I switched course and found my true calling in the field of one-on-one academic tutoring while living in Oakland and Berkeley, CA.
I first cut my teeth as an SAT tutor at the elite test prep company Compass Education, located in Marin County. Since then, I have worked privately as a tutor, expanding my practice to include college-essay coaching, college counseling, and academic tutoring. Over the years, I’ve worked with over a hundred students, and I have accommodated a wide range of learning styles and learning differences. My methods have consistently helped high-school juniors and seniors increase their test scores at least one standard deviation. In addition to the SAT and the ACT, I am formally trained in standardized subject tests and AP Exams (Math, World History, US History, and Literature). I have also helped younger students achieve the same results with the SSAT and ISEE, tests designed for private high-school admission out of middle-school. I am currently earning a certificate as an Independent Education Consultant at UC Irvine, and have expanded my practice to include college advising and executive functioning coaching.
I’m still a hobbyist photographer (see my instagram account below), an avid reader, and a sometimes poet – during my free time I’m usually hiking, making my way through the Criterion Collection, or practicing Vipassana meditation. Occasionally I’ll pull out my guitar for some Travis finger-picking.
